Born as a runt, G'arrl was forced into a harsh life at a young age. After his tribe pushed him out G'arrl learned to work with nature and the power it holds. His cast in life has given him unusual principals when compared to other kobolds and this has lead to a life of adventure.
Background:
G'arrl was born a runt in his tribe. In his tribe they tended to the larger end of kobold size arount 2'5” or even larger. G'arrl wouldn't even break 2' full grown. Because of his small stature he was treated in the way of an omega, always last to eat, forced to sleep outside at times, always the brunt of terrible jokes and pestering. Eventually they would just cast him aside as a burden and a drain on their resources.
He would travel deep into the woods, much farther than he had ever gone with his family. In the wild, G'arrl would eat very little. Sometimes less than he was able to get while with his tribe. There were times he would eat some fruits, leaves or roots which would send him into trances connecting him to the energies of nature. As a result he did not develop physically very well and his capability to fend of sickness was diminished beyond the limited amount it was before.
G'arrl remained nomadic, traveling from one wood to another. One day, when he himself seemed very close to death, he came across a hunting mastiff who was even closer to death than he. He sacrificed some of his limited rations for the animal and brought it back to health, using some of the nature magic he has developed. A bond grew between the two and they became traveling companions. G'arrl named the beast Tomtom, and learned to ride his friend. This enabled G'arrl to conserve more of his energy and gave him another way to find food.
During his wondering, G'arrl and Tomtom would occasionally have to defend themselves from other predators and even small groups of bandits. Despite his kobold heritage, he has developed a sense of honor, causing him to go to the defense of small animals from large predators and occasionally people in trouble from thieves and bandits. These encounters would give G'arrl stronger understanding of the use of his powers and recently he gained the ability to change forms into animals who are much stronger than he is, aiding in his survivability even more. He does have many small pouches draped over Tomtoms back that contain the things he uses to perform his spells.
One night G'arrl found himself traveling much closer to a town than he typically likes, and that is where his story truly begins.....
Suggested Character Development
G'arrl is physically very weak and should have his ability points added to his strength and dexterity for the first time or two when ability scores can be increased. As story flavor, this can be explained as; with his involvement in the adventuring group he is getting more food than he ever has and actually using his body in ways that he did not before which would naturally increase these abilities.
When performing certain spells it would be best described as him consuming a small amount of some plant like substance (root, flower, leaf, mushroom, berry what ever best fits the moment).
I also imagine him using a branch as a walking stick when not riding Tomtom because he is so weak.
It should also be noted that most of his loot collected would go to Tomtom in the form of a saddle (which could also be useful to hold his staff at times and component bags) barding, food, etc...
My method for spicing up the role play of an encounter, is to have G'arrl tie off his staff to one of the ropes on Tomtoms back (or the saddle if it is purchased at the time) and to jump off transforming in the air into what ever beast is chosen for the moment.
